The Taipei Youth Folk Sports Group visited and performed in three cities including Penang, Klang and Johor Bahru, from July 20 to July 26 to showcase Taiwan’s unique Folk Sports. With the supports of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia and Taiwan alumni associations, the delegation conducted a series of successful shows and was warmly received by the teachers and students from Han Chiang Independent High School, Penang, Chung Hua Independent High School Klang, and Foon Yew High School, Johor Bahru.
The Group, which has been active for nearly four decades and has left its mark on five continents, aiming to promote the beauty of Taiwanese folklore movements, and represent Taiwan on the global platform. This year, the performing members are made up of 28 students selected from Taipei Municipal Xiyuan Elementary School, Taipei Municipal Wanhua Junior High School, Taipei Municipal Hongdao Junior High School and alumni of Taipei Municipal Wuxing Elementary School.
Mr. James Buu, the Deputy Representative of TECO in Malaysia, attended the event on July 24, 2024 at Chung Hua Independent High School Klang, to show the supports for the group members. He said that with these young performers' superb skills and outstanding team reputation, it has showcased the authenticity of Taiwan’s folk sports on the international stage, and promoted cultural exchange.
The performance content was directed by the Choreography Team of the University of Taipei, developing from Taiwan’s unique "Freestyle Jump Rope", "Diabolo", and "Shuttlecock Kicking", perfectly combined with the elements of music, dance, gymnastics, and theatrical performance. The performance featured "Elegant Shuttlecock Dance", "Rope Flying High", and "Diabolos Dancing in the Sky" to showcase the unique charm of folk sports. Additionally, creative dances such as "Homeland Harmony", "Mighty Iron Fans", "Taiwanese Youth", and "Radiant Hearts and Soaring Spirits" combined martial arts, modern dance, and folklore elements to create a pleasing sports art.
